Safety WalkRobert Fulton Elementary Cleveland, Ohio When budget cuts stopped the school buses at Robert Fulton Elementary School, many students faced a one- or two-mile walk to and from school every day. Parents and teachers had safety concerns. The school responded by setting up “Safe Haven Points” in churches and businesses throughout the community to help protect the children. After establishing these Safe Haven Points, the school hosted the Safety Walk to acquaint students and their families with these locations throughout the community. More... Walking School BusLincoln Elementary School Wausau, Wisconsin Most students at Lincoln Elementary School live close enough to walk to and from the school. During the dark winter months, however, children found themselves unable to participate in after-school activities because of potential safety issues on the walk home. Many parents could not pick up their children because they work or take care of younger children at home. To solve this problem, the Action Team for Partnerships (ATP) developed the Walking School Bus, teams of two adults who walk the children home after school. More...
