After School Study SessionsKaiserslautern American Middle School and High School , Kaiserslautern Germany In both the middle and high schools, students were struggling with their schoolwork, athletes needed assistance in maintaining their grade point averages for player eligibility, and the number of students earning D’s and F’s was on the rise. In the past, Kaiserslautern offered tutoring programs during the school day that were somewhat successful but ultimately not feasible because of block scheduling. To solve these challenges, an After-School Study Session program was started in October. More... Raising Better Learners Workshop SeriesOliver Ellsworth School Windsor, Connecticut The School, Family, Community Partnerships (SFCP) Team at Oliver Ellsworth School introduced a series of evening workshops titled, “Raising Readers and Raising Mathematicians,” for parents and students in grades one through five. The Raising Readers workshop was offered first in order to address the school improvement goals that the school adopted as part of the Success For All school reform model. Success with Raising Readers led to many requests from parents and the Ellsworth PTO to hold a similar evening to introduce the mathematics curriculum. Thus, the school developed Raising Mathematicians and implemented it for the first time during the 2002-2003 school year. Responses were so positive that plans are underway to offer a Raising Writers Night during the 2003-2004 school year. More... Social Studies Kick-offsRosary School Manning, Alberta Canada The goal of the Social Studies Kick- Offs was to improve the percentage of students meeting the acceptable/ excellence standard of the Social Studies Nine Provincial Achievement Test (PAT) to 75%. The district had received PAT scores that were lower than the provincial average. This was of great concern to the school because social studies was the only core course that had low scores. The Action Team for Partnerships believed that if parents understood what was being taught in social studies, and the importance of the PAT, scores might begin to improve. Also, with greater knowledge, parents might be able to help the students at home. The Action Team and the social studies teacher collaborated to invite the ninth-grade students and their parents to an evening of food, fun, and games that highlighted the next topic the ninth graders were studying in social studies.
