Beat Pete: An Estimating Project

Kennedy Junior High School
Lisle,  Illinois

Kennedy Junior High School has a business partnership with Jackson Moving Services. As a result of this partnership, the teacher of the sixth grade Advanced Math CHAMPS Team was able “to provide students with the opportunity for quality work in the math curriculum through the application of estimation skills, while calculating volume and weight in a real-world situation.” Beat Pete: An Estimation Project allowed the students to work as if they were a salesperson for Jackson Moving Services by providing a customer with an accurate estimate for their moving job. Family Math Night

Families who attended the evenings participated in a program that included dinner, four math sessions led by Woodridge Primary School teachers, and a raffle of math related prizes. Family Math: Interactive Monthly Projects

Deep Run Elementary School
Elkridge,  Maryland

Scores on standardized math tests and state tests were not increasing as steadily as test scores in reading and writing. As part of the School Improvement Team, the Math Committee set the goal of improving family and community connections to enhance math performance. The Math Committee, consisting of a representative from every grade, met monthly to develop a curriculum- linked math activity that families could do together at home. The purpose was to show students how math exists in all parts of their lives, not just in school. More...

Reaching For the Stars in Math

Hamlin Park School #74
Buffalo,  New York

Hamlin Park School #74 implemented the Family Math Program during the 2002-03 school year to support students in improving their math achievement. As part of the Comprehensive School Education Plan, the Math Action Team for Partnerships designed a One-Year Action Plan in Mathematics that focused on two goals: to inform parents of what students need to know and be able to do at each grade level and to provide the parents with hand-on activities enabling them to support student work at home. The Family Math program mirrored these goals by introducing parents to practices that enabled them to assist their children to improve their math skills and gain an appreciation for math. Kindergarten through sixth grade parents, students, and teachers participated in this program. More...
