Fitness Fair: Exercise Your Mind, Pump Up Your GradesLowndes Middle School Valdosta, Georgia Family Fitness Fair kicked off at 5:30 pm on April 22, 2003, with perfect weather. Families moseyed to the back of the campus with their beach towels and camp chairs in hand to the end of the football field. Bright yellow and white tents greeted families and shaded them while they signed in for the event and received their group assignments, meal tickets, and door prize tickets. On stage, Irene Miller, mother of pro-football player Randall Godfrey, spoke to the 200-plus crowd about new research that demonstrates the link between physical fitness and academic achievement. Mrs. Miller shared her own knowledge about physical education, and her beliefs that you do not have to join a gym to get fit and that parents lead by example for their children. Try it at LunchGood Shepherd School Peace River, Alberta Canada Good Shepherd School wanted to increase their middle school students’ participation in physical fitness activities by 10%. Most students stayed at school during the lunch break, which made them available for lunchtime activities. A traditional intramurals program existed, however it consisted mostly of competitive sports and involved a limited number of students. Teachers invited local fitness instructors to offer sample physical activity classes for students during lunchtime. Students participated in different activities available in the community, especially those students who would typically remain uninvolved in competitive sports and traditional physical activities. You Go, GirlRosary School Manning, Alberta Canada Rosary School belongs to an organization called Ever Active Schools, which promotes daily activity and healthy lifestyles. As a result of the school’s affiliation with this organization, and the constant research that indicates children are more inactive and overweight, the Action Team for Partnerships decided to add a goal to their action plan addressing the health of girls. In partnership with Health Promotions, the Action Team created a one-day event for girls, grades six through twelve, which stressed daily activity and healthy living. More...
