A
professor emerita at Howard University, Dr. Winters was a member
of the sociology department and previously served as Dean of the
College of Liberal Arts. She has taught at Yale University, the
University of Connecticut School of Social Work, where she served
as Assistant Dean of Educational Affairs, and at Smith College,
where she was Dean of the College. She is co-author of The Practice
of Social Work in Schools: An Ecological Perspective (Free Press/Macmillan)
and author of African American Mothers and Urban Schools: The
Power of Participation (Lexington Books/An Imprint of Macmillan,
Inc.). She has collaborated on a number of professional and research
articles.
She served
as Chief Social Worker of the Baldwin King School Program, the forerunner
of the School Development Program headed by Dr. James Comer, Yale
University Child Study Center, and was instrumental in fostering
the parent involvement component.
A Ph.D.
in sociology from Yale University and a M.S. from Columbia University
School of Social Work, Dr. Winters continues to foster collaboration
between universities, schools, parents and local communities. She
has consulted with school systems in Connecticut, Baltimore, MD,
Washington, DC, Massachusetts, New York City, White Plains, NY,
New Orleans, Milwaukee, North Carolina, St. Louis, Missouri, and
Maryland.
Her board
memberships include the Board of Managers of Casey Family Services,
the operational arm of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and the Black
Women's Agenda, where she serves as editor of the BWA Report
Newsletter. She is associate editor of JESPAR, the Journal
of Education of Students Placed at Risk published by Lawrence
Erlbaum Associates, Inc. (New Jersey and London).
