Gina
Hewes is an Associate Research Scientist at the Center for Social
Organization of Schools at Johns Hopkins University, working with
the Systemic Support for School Reform research group. She received
her B.A. from Yale University in Psychology, and recently finished
her Ph.D. in Sociology at Harvard University, where she studied
inequality in the labor market. Her research interests at Johns
Hopkins also revolve around issues of stratification, with a focus
on educational opportunities and outcomes for disadvantaged and
minority students. An important recent project is a major quantitative
meta-analysis, with colleagues at Johns Hopkins, of the research
literature on comprehensive school reform, a study which has received
national attention from both the research community and the general
media.
Hewess
other projects at CSOS include an investigation of the relationship
between availability of standards-based instruction and student
and school risk factors, using data from the National Assessment
of Educational Progress; a meta-analysis of the research literature
on the Success for All comprehensive school reform program; and
a study to tease out the achievement causes and consequences of
retention in grade for elementary school students.
