Stephen Plank is an assistant professor in the Department
of Sociology and a research scientist at the Center for Social Organization
of Schools, both at Johns Hopkins University. He received his B.A. from
Northwestern University (1990) and his Ph.D. in sociology from the University
of Chicago (1995). He has published articles and book chapters on peer
relations in school, individuals' transitions to post-secondary education
or work, school climate, and secondary school reform. A book by Plank,
published in 2000 by Teachers College Press, is entitled "Finding
One's Place: Teaching Styles and Peer Relations in Diverse Classrooms."
Currently, at CSOS and as a part of CRESPAR, Plank is involved with
analyses of NAEP data -- studying issues of standards-based reform
in science instruction -- as a part of the Systemic Supports for
School Reform program. He also helps to coordinate the Postdoctoral
Fellowships in Education Research, funded by the Spencer Foundation.
In 2002, CSOS elected Plank to be Associate Director for Academic
Programs, in which capacity he works to develop joint activities
of CSOS, the Department of Sociology, and other JHU units.
