Article in Principal Describes Leadership Roles for Partnerships
Principals have important roles to play in strengthening school programs of family and community involvement. This theme is discussed by NNPS authors Joyce L. Epstein and Natalie Rodriguez Jansorn in the lead article of the January/February 2004 issue of Principal, journal of the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
The article, “Developing Successful Partnership Programs,” outlines 10 actions that principals should take to support and strengthen partnership programs, family involvement, and results for students.
- Use the bully pulpit of the principal’s office to let everyone know that the school supports good partnerships to help all students succeed at high levels.
- Let all students know that their families are important partners in their education.
- Allocate funds for the partnership program and planned activities.
- Discuss all teachers’ roles in building good partnerships at the first faculty meeting each year.
- Help teachers become more effective in communicating with all parents about students’ homework, schoolwork, grades, and test scores and in conducting parent-teacher-student conferences.
- Publicize scheduled involvement activities throughout the school year.
- Guide the school’s Action Team for Partnerships (ATP) in making periodic reports on partnership plans and accomplishments to the school council and other school groups.
- Work with community leaders to locate resources that will enrich the curriculum and help students, teachers, and parents in important ways.
- Recognize and thank ATP leaders, team members, family volunteers, and other partners for their involvement each year.
- Work with district leaders to improve school programs of partnerships from year to year.
