The staff at Robert H. Jamison School had a problem: Suspensions and classroom disruptions were on the rise, and students were missing class and roaming the hallways. Rather than responding with punishments, the administration, led by the Action Team for Partnerships (ATP), tried a positive solution: getting dads and other men who were important in the students’ lives involved. Palmetto Elementary/Middle School invited parents of students who were having behavior problems to a series of Parent Support Workshops. During these meetings, which were held twice per quarter, parents learned strategies for helping their children become better students. They also gave parents an opportunity to share their stories with other parents facing similar challenges.
