D.R.E.A.M Night

McGee's Crossroads Elementary School
Angier,  North Carolina

D.R.E.A.M. Night (Do Read Every Available Minute) is the vision of our Reading Recovery Teacher. Parents and students from one grade level were invited to the school each month for an evening activity that focused on reading. All grade level parents could come to learn some helpful tips to use at home with their readers, and to share a reading activity with their children. More...

Family Reading Night

Sam Davey Elementary School
Eau Claire,  Wisconsin

Sam Davey Elementary School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin organized a Family Reading Night to help reinforce our goal of improved student performance in the area of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Since we wanted to tie our reading night in with a birthday celebration for Dr. Seuss, we held our event on March 1. "The Hat Lady," a storyteller from Waupaca, performed for the students during the day, and again in the evening to kick off the night for families. The fifth graders also acted out the story Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (complete with props they had created), asking the audience to participate on the repeated lines in the text. Our students enjoyed this presentation during the school day, and the repeat performance for the families in the evening. More...

Jump Start to Reading

Cleveland Elementary School
Clayton,  North Carolina

Jump Start to Reading was designed by our Action Team, and implemented by our school staff. Our goal in planning this activity was to increase shared reading at home for kindergarten and first grade students, and to provide parents with knowledge about reading skills and to encourage them to help their children learn at home. We began the practice during the 1998-99 school year, and plan to continue it for the next two years. More...

K-1 Reading Night

Nicolet Elementary School
Kaukauna,  Wisconsin

The K-1 Reading Night started when our school principal, Nan Bunnow, got together with our reading specialists Julie Schwartzbauer and Lou Mae Russo, and teachers, Kris Mielke, and Marilyn Schmildelkofer. Frustration was expressed by parents and teachers. Parents wanted to help their children read and didn't know how. Teachers needed parents to be consistent with the method being taught at school.
