Book Buddies

Thurmont Middle School
Thurmont,  Maryland

On April 28, 2003, the Literacy Council and students in the reading intervention classes hosted a Book Buddies Celebration. The celebration was the culminating event of a program that encouraged the reading intervention students to read to younger siblings at home. Students in the reading intervention classes struggled with their reading skills, and many of their parents did not have time to read to their children in the evenings. With the Book Buddies program, reading intervention students read to younger children, which boosted the love of reading and reading skills for all of the children, regardless of age. More...

Get Caught Reading

Good Shepherd School
Alberta,  Canada

In Alberta, Provincial Achievement Tests are administered to all students in grades three, six, and nine. This year the third grade teachers felt that students were weak in the area of reading and possibly not getting adequate support at home to participate in the existing home reading programs. During a designated week each month, school staff called each third-grade student at home to “catch” him or her reading. The goal of the project was to encourage the third graders to read more at home. The Action Team for Partnerships got the initial idea from the 2002 volume of Promising Partnership Practices, but they adapted the practice to catch only third grade students on a monthly basis. Head Start Lending Library

Literacy, Inc. (LINC) & Builders for Family and Youth Services
New York,  New York

Early literacy for children is the key to success. When parents unite to support literacy, they can make a difference for their children. The Head Start Lending Library at Builders for Family and Youth Services in Brooklyn, New York, is one example of the powerful role parents can play in early literacy. Parents wanted to provide books for families and children to borrow without having to walk ten blocks to the Brooklyn Library. The Head Start Lending Library, designed and operated by parents, resulted from the organization’s goal to prepare parents in taking leadership roles in supporting their children’s education before they enter the public school system. Monthly Family Reading Night

Clara E. Westropp School
Cleveland,  Ohio

Clara E. Westropp School sponsored a Family Reading Night each month during the 2002-03 school year. There were two goals for the Family Reading Nights: the first was to provide parents, students, teachers, and other school staff with an opportunity to develop a sense of partnership. The second goal was to link home and school by providing parents with strategies and activities to reinforce classroom instruction.
