Family Literacy Night

Allen Elementary School
Canton,  Ohio

Allen Elementary hosted a family literacy event on the same night as parent-teacher conferences. More than 200 families visited the auditorium to pick up materials that they could use at home with their children to practice Terra Nova proficiency testing skills. Grade-level packets included activities and games focused on literacy skills. Allen’s Lead Literacy Specialist and the district Family Involvement Coordinator answered questions and assisted parents in working with their children. The district Family Involvement Coordinator also introduced parents to the Fast Start poetry program for grades kindergarten through two. The Family Literacy Night helped support a school improvement goal of 75% of students passing the Terra Nova proficiency test. More...

Family Writing

Highlands Elementary School
Naperville,  Illinios

A parent survey at Highlands Elementary revealed an interest in learning more about the writing process. The survey findings coincided with the school improvement goal focused on writing and were discussed with the Building Leadership Team. The School, Family, and Community Partnerships Literacy Committee, consisting of teachers, parents, and the Learning Resource Center (LRC) director, considered different ways to meet the needs of the parents. The committee decided on three teacher-led parent workshops that would provide participants with a greater familiarity with the writing process, specifically narrative, persuasive, and expository writing, and a greater understanding of the writing ISAT test. Mother Goose Night

Early Childhood Center 78
Buffalo,  New York

Early Childhood Center 78 (E.C.C. 78) houses approximately 400 students in grades pre-kindergarten through grade two. With students’ ages in mind, our school created Mother Goose Night to reinforce our children’s early literacy skills. Studies have shown that children who read and know nursery rhymes are more likely to read at a younger age. We also wanted to increase parental involvement and to show parents that learning can be fun. Mother Goose Night reinforced the goals in our Comprehensive School Education Plan. More...

W.A.V.E Parent Involvement

Andrew J. Rickoff Elementary School
Cleveland,  Ohio

Literacy is Rickoff’s focal point, as well as a safe school environment in which all children can learn. Through a partnership with W.A.V.E.
